“Malawi had the greatest export of fish to international market last year compared to previous years where the exports were very low,” it said.
The report added that although the fish industry has registered growth, it is still facing challenges like operating a fishing enterprise due to increased prices of engine boats spare parts and start-up capital for those in fishing industry, among others.
Due to such challenges, it continued, Malawi is failing to satisfy the high demand of fish in both the local and international markets.
Meanwhile, the country’s annual fish production had increased by eight per cent to 157,268 metric tonnes in 2016.
