Kenya’s government will begin financing the construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi expressway as part of the budget allocation for the upcoming fiscal year. This follows the allocation of USD 1.78 Billion to the Infrastructure Department in the coming financial year to cover funding for various infrastructure projects, including highways, railways etc.
The Mombasa-Nairobi expressway project is a planned four-lane dual-carriage road linking Nairobi to Mombasa that has been designed to help reduce road travel time on the existing busy route. The road has been designed to allow the possibility to increase the size a 6-lane highway. KeNHA, the government agency responsible for road construction, signed a contractual agreement in 2017 with Betchel International, an American structural engineering and construction firm planning, constructing and running the proposed expressway.
The feasibility study done earlier showed that the project ‘s profitability was that the developer was allowed to charge a toll to recover the expense. The Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Road and the Kenol-Marua road that runs from Thika to Nyeri will be another route to receive funding in the coming year. The funding of these projects comes in the wake of efforts by the government to stimulate the economy in the aftermath of the corona pandemic ravages.
