The Netherlands-based ZF DEVCO and the Presidential Delivery Bureau (PDB) in Zanzibar have signed a cooperation agreement regarding the construction of a US$400 million passenger port in Mpigaduri, north of Stone Town.
The new port will consist of a passenger and automobile ferry terminal, a bus terminal, a water taxi station and seaplane landing area, a logistics and freight center, a five-star hotel, an international exhibition center, a marina, and retail stores.
The PDB estimates that the project will be completed within the next 36 months. The project will be undertaken in two phases. The first phase will concentrate on the 22,000-square-meter passenger ferry terminal, 4,000-square-meter auto ferry terminal, and community services.
The second phase will include the construction of a 22,500-square-metre logistics complex, an exhibition centre, offices, a hotel, and an electric water taxi area.
The project will be carried out as a public-private partnership (PPP), with ZF DEVCO representing a group of Dutch and local businesses.
The multi-modal passenger terminal is expected to relieve congestion at the nearby Malindi port, which was handed over last year by Zanzibar Multipurpose Terminal (ZMT), an Africa Global Logistics affiliate.
