To increase water coverage nationwide, the government has created the National Water and Sanitation Plan (NAWASIP).
By 2030, the plan, which incorporates all 47 County Integrated Plans (CIDPs), is anticipated to direct the construction of infrastructure projects valued at Sh995 billion.
According to Water Cabinet Secretary (CS) Eng. Eric Mugaa, the government has opened up the water industry to private investors in order to meet the goal of having 100% water coverage in the nation by 2030.
He claimed that the president’s recent approval of the Water Act Amendment Bill had established a clear path for PPPs to succeed in the industry.
Speaking to the media in Kisumu at the strategic plan launch for the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency (LVSWWDA), the CS stated that several investors have already indicated interest in investing in water sub-sector projects.
He noted that his ministry was already working on PPP documents for the Advanced Desalination project in Lamu, the Sabaki Water Carrier project in Malindi, the Londiani Dam project.
He claimed that one of the projects being packaged using the PPP model was the Koru-Soin dam in Kisumu, which is hailed as a long-term solution to floods in Nyando.
