The Kenyan government has allocated Sh1.7 billion for the construction of 37 pilot Regional Sports Academies within the country.
Salim Mvurya, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, stated that the goal of this initiative is to nurture and develop talent through the creation of cutting-edge sports facilities.
As a result, Mvurya has pledged to redouble the government’s attempts to catch up with rival sporting countries by providing classic training fields for youngsters, complete with cutting-edge infrastructure.
We plan to develop athletic academies in the Matuga and Kinango constituencies of Kwale County. We have already allocated Sh110 million to establish the pilot sports centers in the area, Mvurya said.
Nandi Hills, Teso South, Keiyo North, Mwala, Bomet East, Ugenya, Kiharu, Suba South, Mogotio, Turbo, Ikolomani, Budalangi, Ikolomani, Hamisi, Yatta, Kasarani, Aldai, Marakwet West, Kabuchai, and Nambale are among the constituencies where sports facilities will be constructed.
The pilot phase additionally involves the constituencies of Matungulu, Marakwet East, Kabete, Webuye West, Mwingi West, Thika Town, Keiyo South, Moyale, Turkana North, Isiolo Town, Embakasi Central, Kitui East, Turbaj, Mandera, and Kandara.
Furthermore, as arrangements for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in February 2025 get underway, the CS said they assured Confederation of African Football President Dr. Patrice Motsepe while on his most recent trip to Kenya of our readiness to co-host the championship as originally planned.
Mvurya confirmed that the renovations of all the stadiums that they identified, including the Nyayo National Stadium, Kasarani, Moi International Stadium, Kasarani Sports Academy, Ulinzi Sports Complex Police SACCO Stadium, were going to be completed ahead of schedule.
Regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the CS stated that the country is prepared not only to host, but also to win the AFCON 2027 cup. Matuga Legislator Kassim Tandaza applauded the government for starting the construction of sports facilities in constituencies.
