The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (Nupea) states that construction is projected to start in 2027 and be completed by 2034.
Justus Wabuyabo, CEO of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA), stated during a live KBC program called Sema na Spox; Bonga na Gava, which was hosted by the Office of the Spokesperson, that the organization is nearing completion on the building of the nation’s first nuclear power plant, which would be a significant turning point in Kenya’s energy development.
“The construction of a nuclear power plant, which is currently in the critical stage and will directly create 10,000 jobs, was conceived in 2010. Kenya is ahead. The only other African nation with a nuclear power program is South Africa, and Egypt is the next to complete its nuclear power program. Kenya comes in third.” He stated
Regarding skills development, Wabuyabo recognized that although there remains a gap, Nupea has pinpointed skilled Kenyans who have undergone training in nations with advanced nuclear technology.
“A nation needs to make sure that it has a sufficient number of qualified personnel to oversee a nuclear power program, and NuPEA is doing just that. We have been selecting capable Kenyans and sending them overseas to gain personal knowledge. Here, we are developing local training in collaboration with national academic institutions. This is significant work,” Wabuyabo added.
Additionally, the CEO, Justus Wabuyabo, described how nuclear technology is used in vital industries like electricity generation.
“This technology is extremely beneficial. Above all, in our situation, nuclear energy is used to produce electricity all over the world,” he concluded.
