Few things are more important in the busy marketplaces of Stone Town and the growing beach resorts of Nungwi than dependable energy lighting. The foundation of Zanzibar’s economy is dependable energy, which powers everything from small businesses operating machinery to hotels accommodating thousands of visitors and households depending on it for refrigeration and lighting.
Modernizing the grid and advancing domestic renewable energy lighting, especially solar power lighting, are the main goals of Zanzibar’s new electrical lighting initiatives. To lessen reliance on Tanzania’s mainland, stabilize the system, and satisfy the archipelago’s increasing need for lighting, a significant infrastructure makeover and new generating plants are being put into place.
The Zanzibar Energy Sector Transformation and Access Project (ZESTA), a significant electricity project, aims to improve the city’s grid and boost local renewable energy lighting production. The archipelago currently depends mainly on electricity supplied from Tanzania’s mainland, which has resulted in ongoing shortages and a fluctuating supply. The
Project intends to strengthen the city’s grid and improve the production of renewable energy for lighting locally
ZESTA seeks to increase the production of green electricity lighting and increase access to dependable and effective lighting services. It also emphasizes enhancing institutional capacity in the electricity industry and updating the infrastructure for improved management of green electricity.
Through the implementation of a grid-wide SCADA system for improved monitoring and control, the project facilitates ZECO’s evolution to a utility capable of managing an advanced system with integrated variable renewable electricity. The goal of this component is to build a strong, contemporary transmission and distribution system that can manage variable renewable energy sources and increase access to lighting.
