The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have officially begun construction on a KSh 1.7 billion development initiative in Siaya County, marking a major milestone in the region’s infrastructure and social development. The groundbreaking ceremony, led by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, set in motion two flagship projects – a modern referral hospital and the expansion of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya town.
Speaking during the event, CS Tuya reaffirmed the government’s dedication to delivering projects that directly improve citizens’ lives. “This administration is determined to ensure that the people of Siaya have access to quality healthcare and modern public facilities that foster community growth,” she said.
The state-of-the-art referral hospital, once complete, will feature advanced medical equipment and specialized service units designed to enhance healthcare access and quality. Tuya emphasized that the project aligns with the Kenya Kwanza government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which prioritizes healthcare infrastructure as a foundation for national development.
At the same event, Tuya announced that KDF engineers would oversee the expansion of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, upgrading it from a 5,000-seater to a modern 20,000-seat sports facility. The works will include the installation of new terraces, roofing, and enhanced support infrastructure. “This project will not only promote sports and talent development but also position Siaya as a key regional hub for major athletic and community events,” she noted.
The Defence CS was accompanied by Principal Secretaries Elijah Mwangi (Sports), Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services), and Dr. Patrick Mariru (Defence), underscoring the multi-sectoral importance of the projects.
Siaya Governor James Orengo lauded the partnership between the county and national governments, assuring residents of his administration’s support in ensuring that the projects are completed on schedule and maintained sustainably.
Also present at the ceremony were Siaya Deputy County Commissioner Robert Ng’etich, County Secretary Joseph Ogutu, and members of the County Assembly, who joined in expressing optimism about the county’s bright infrastructural future.
