Tanzania’s Ntorya–Madimba Pipeline Project Set to Strengthen National Power Supply

Mtwara — The authorities have amplified their endeavors to fulfill the objective of generating 8,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030, as a result of ongoing progress in the construction of the Ntorya-Madimba natural gas pipeline located in the Mtwara Region.

The pipeline is currently 35 percent finished and is expected to be completed by September 2026. Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi has instructed the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) to closely monitor the contractor to guarantee that the project is completed punctually and meets the established standards.

He expressed his views in the Mtwara Region after the launch of the construction of a 34.2-kilometre pipeline that will carry raw natural gas from the Ntorya discovery area to the Madimba Natural Gas Processing Plant.

This strategic initiative, amounting to 120 billion shillings, can transport 140 million standard cubic feet of gas on a daily basis.

As stated in a project report submitted to the minister, gas production at Ntorya is anticipated to commence in September of this year, prior to the overall completion of the project, which is set for December. The minister underscored the necessity of achieving the September production target without exception.

According to the minister, the pipeline is expected to boost growth in the gas sector by aiding electricity generation, attracting industrial investors, and fostering the creation of factories that will provide employment opportunities for Tanzanians.

Mr. Ndejembi stated that the rise in gas production will contribute to ensuring dependable power for industries and broaden access to cleaner cooking energy. Additionally, he mentioned that under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership, the government is focusing on enhancing natural gas production to bolster energy security and aid the nation’s industrialization efforts.

TPDC Director General, Mussa Makame, announced that the construction of the pipeline has progressed to 35 percent since the commencement of the project in January.

He further stated that the pipeline will traverse 11 villages located between Ntorya and the Madimba Natural Gas Processing Plant.
