Lighting Up Tanzania While Advancing Clean Energy Goals

Tanzania’s journey toward widespread access to clean, affordable, and reliable electricity has taken an important step forward. While national discussions often focus on expanding power networks across the mainland, a quiet but meaningful transformation is unfolding around Lake Victoria—supporting the country’s broader goals of inclusive development, economic growth, and environmental protection.

A renewable energy company based in Arusha has entered into a one-year strategic partnership, signed in early December 2025, to expand access to clean and sustainable lighting across four islands in Lake Victoria. This initiative aligns closely with Tanzania’s development vision, which places universal access to clean cooking, energy, and lighting at the heart of national progress.

Although these islands are home to relatively small populations, their electrification marks a significant national milestone. They stand as real-life examples of how off-grid clean energy solutions can strengthen Tanzania’s environmental commitments, boost economic opportunities, and improve the quality of life for communities that have long been underserved. Dr. Prosper Magali, CEO of PowerHut Renewables Limited, said the project is already responding to the long-standing hopes of local residents for better lighting services. Many people, are now feeling a renewed sense of optimism and relief.

According to Dr. Magali, reliable electricity opens up new possibilities for both individuals and communities. It allows children to study after dark, enables healthcare workers to provide consistent services, and helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses. “We are excited to be part of this effort to deliver reliable electricity that strengthens healthcare, education, and economic growth,” she added.
