In order to improve water supply, resource management, and sanitation services throughout the islands, the Zanzibar government has inked a historic deal with NIRAS International Consulting to create a comprehensive Water Master Plan.
The agreement, which was recently signed at the Ministry of Water, Energy, and Minerals offices in Maisara, Unguja, aims to address persistent issues in the water industry, such as insufficient supply, ineffective distribution systems, and restricted access to safe and clean water.
According to Seif Kombo Pandu, Deputy Minister for Water, Energy, and Minerals, the proposal is a long-awaited solution that would revolutionize Zanzibar’s water service delivery.
He pointed out that by mapping all water infrastructure using contemporary technology, the approach will assist lower the frequency of significant pipeline outages and increase reliability.
He declared, “I am confident that this plan will help identify new water sources, increase availability across our islands, and establish strong strategies for protecting and conserving these resources.”
The Deputy Minister went on to say that the master plan will boost sanitation and water resource management while acting as a long-term roadmap to provide sustainable, safe, and dependable water services.
According to Permanent Secretary Joseph Kilangi, Zanzibar has never had a thorough master plan for the water sector, which has led to ongoing problems like inadequate distribution networks, unreliable services, and water shortages.
“It has been challenging to establish sustainable strategies and accurately assess the sector’s needs without a clear master plan,” he stated.
“The initiative will help address pressures from population growth, climate change, and rising demand for water services,” he continued.
