Tanzania’s state utility, the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), has launched a major clean-energy procurement campaign to scale up the country’s national grid capacity. Key highlights of this initiative include adding roughly 500MW of wind generation and 463MWp of solar photovoltaic power by partnering with independent power producers (IPPs). This strategic shift aims to meet the nation’s rapidly accelerating demand for electricity, diversify its power generation mix, and build a resilient infrastructure capable of powering industrial expansion, commercial activities, and local communities.
Beyond boosting domestic energy supply, this initiative creates an attractive operational framework for international project developers, technology providers, engineering firms, and private investors. In addition to driving direct infrastructure investments, the projects will facilitate domestic skill development, technology sharing, supply chain deployment, and local job creation. Furthermore, the effort aligns with Tanzania’s active engagement in cross-border transmission networks and open-access energy trade, establishing the country as a regional hub for sustainable power trading and a modern, low-carbon energy economy.
