After completing important project preparations, the government plans to start building a dam worth over 20 billion dollars in Engikaret Ward, Longido District.
Dr. Steven Kiruswa, a member of parliament for Longido and deputy minister for minerals, stated that the project is anticipated to supply water for residents and cattle, assisting in addressing the long-standing water scarcity in Engikaret and surrounding areas.
Following the opening of two classrooms and a teacher’s office constructed at Shikinzi Primary School in Kiseriani Village with assistance from Barrick Gold, community donations, and his own contributions, Dr. Kiruswa made the statements at a public assembly in Siteti hamlet.
“Land for the dam had already been secured, feasibility studies had been finished, and funding had been made available, with construction expected to begin once a contractor is engaged,” he stated.
Dr. Kiruswa claims that the project will revolutionize pastoralist communities’ access to water and make it the biggest dam in Longido District.
He added that after the project is finished, locals will need to protect the facility, but it will lessen the stress of traveling great distances to find water for domestic and animal usage.
Mr. Thomas Ngobei, the chairperson of the Longido District Council, praised the initiative and stated that it will greatly increase the availability of water for both humans and animals.
According to him, the dam will be one of the district’s biggest development initiatives and provide residents in Engikaret and the neighboring areas with long-term advantages.
Mr. Ngobei stated that the administration had been carrying out initiatives in stages according to available resources and priority needs, although he noted that the area still had development issues.
Mr. Papa Nakuta, the Longido CCM District Chairperson, stated that the party would keep an eye on how government-funded development projects are being carried out to make sure funds are being used for the intended goals.
