{"id":22063,"date":"2019-05-10T11:19:15","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T11:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abdas.org\/?p=22063"},"modified":"2019-05-10T11:34:33","modified_gmt":"2019-05-10T11:34:33","slug":"kenya-uganda-signs-bilateral-power-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abdas.org\/2019\/05\/10\/kenya-uganda-signs-bilateral-power-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya-Uganda Signs Bilateral Power Trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/abdas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/powertrade.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"375\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-22068\" srcset=\"https:\/\/abdas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/powertrade.jpg 750w, https:\/\/abdas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/powertrade-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/abdas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/powertrade-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/abdas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/powertrade-500x250.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>Kenya and Uganda have signed a new power purchase agreement (PPA) that facilitates bilateral power trade and takes into consideration new dynamics in the energy sector, including increased generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, which is designed to facilitate two-way electricity imports and exports between the two countries, marks the end of the previous pact that only focused on Kenya\u2019s imports from Uganda, and limited supply to emergency situations.<\/p>\n<p>The signing of the PPA last month was made compulsary by investments by both countries in electricity generation facilities resulting in excess capacity, a development that has prompted a downward revision of tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe new PPA that has been negotiated with Uganda is good for Kenya because the tariffs have decreased drastically,\u201d Jared Othieno, the acting managing director of Kenya Power, told The EastAfrican.<\/p>\n<p>He added that under the new agreement, Kenya intends to import a maximum of 50MW from Uganda annually.
