Japan’s Eurus Energy to Invest in Tanzania’s largest Wind Power Project

Japan’s wind energy developer Eurus Energy has acquired a $ 10 million investment share in Winlab Africa, a subsidiary of the Australian group Winlab Limited.

The funding will be used to fund several projects, including Southwest Tanzania’s Miombo Hewani wind farm.

A company statement explained that Eurus Energy, which thus has a 25 percent interest in Windlab Africa, now holds a seat on the company’s board of directors based in South Africa through this investment.

This project will require a total investment of $ 750 million to be developed, making it Tanzania’s largest wind project.

“We will work together to accelerate the development of our projects in this region (East Africa). While many of these markets are not without challenges, the need for massive investment in power generation infrastructure is clear,” said Roger Price, Windlab’s CEO.

In three phases of 100MW each, the Miombo Hewani wind project will be implemented. The first phase would involve installing 34 wind turbines for a $ 250 million investment.

The electricity generated from the park will be purchased by Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco), which would then feed the energy into the national grid. The construction of a high-voltage line for the transmission of energy from the park to the Makambako substation would facilitate this.

Windlab estimates that a million people will benefit from this amount of energy, mainly in Makambako City.
