Volkswagen South Africa all set to produce 100,000 Polos in a year

At the Kariega facility in the Eastern Cape, Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has produced 100,000 of its newly updated Polos. On August 16, 2021, the Kariega plant, which has been producing the Polo since 2018, started producing the redesigned Polo as a result, the plant produced 100 000 Polos in just over a year.

The special 100 000th car, a white Polo GTI with left-hand drive that was going to Germany, was the 74 688th Polo produced in 2022.88 163 Polos were shipped to 38 different nations out of the 100,000 total vehicles, while 11 837 Polos were delivered to the South African market.

VWSA emphasises that it has already celebrated a number of milestones related to the Polo this year, including the 500 000 mark which includes the facelift and the model introduced in 2018 in July and the one million mark for Polos made for export in May.

As the sole producer of the Polo GTI in the world, VWSA now produces this car for all right-hand-drive markets while supplementing production for left-hand-drive regions.
The milestone, according to VWSA, was made despite the automotive industry’s struggles with semiconductor shortages and the effects of the Ukraine conflict.

It is an accomplishment to have reached this milestone under regular circumstances. It is a true credit to the commitment and tenacity of the VWSA team that they were able to accomplish this under the trying conditions of the previous year.

VWSA production Director Ulrich Schwabe adds, I am proud of every employee who has contributed to this achievement and I look forward to celebrating many more milestones with the VWSA family.
