Potential Investors Selected for Mozambique Hydro Project

Following the conclusion of a prequalification round, Mozambique has selected seven potential investors for the development of the 1,500MW Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project, located on the Zambezi River in the country’s Tete province.

Seven companies have now been selected as potential investors, with the chosen companies yet to be announced.

The development follows eight companies namely Power China; Longyuan Power; Sumitomo; Kansai; Scatec; EDF; a consortium led by ETC Holdings Mauritius; and a consortium led by Webuild Group, submitting expression of interest.

The UAS 4.5 billion project, comprising the construction of a run-of-river dam located 61km downstream from the Cahora Bassa Dam; a 1,500 MW hydroelectric power plant and a 1,300 Km energy transmission line linking Tete with the capital city, Maputo, is set to further position the Southern African country as a regional energy hub.
