Kenya: Cabinet Approves Construction of a New 60,000-Capacity Stadium to Host AFCON 2027

In preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027, President William Ruto’s cabinet approved the construction of a new 60,000 seating capacity stadium.

This follows after Kenya’s selection to host the coveted Continental Cup in 2027.

“The Cabinet endorsed the construction of a new 60,000-capacity stadium in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027,” according to a State House statement.

Kenya presented the ‘Pamoja bid,’ a collaborative bid with Tanzania and Uganda that beat out offers from Egypt, Botswana and Senegal.

Ababu Namwaba, the Sports CS, had already handed over the construction and refurbishment of venues in the country over to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in preparation for the event.

The renowned 30,000-seater Nyayo Stadium, the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, the 60,000-seater Moi International Sports Complex in Kasarani were among the venues to be upgraded, as was the construction of a new football-only stadium called Talanta Stadium.

Kenya opting for the KDF for this massive project because of the military’s exceptional achievement in completing the 10,000-seat Ulinzi Sports Complex in record time.

Neighbours Tanzania is following Kenya’s lead, announcing intentions to build new stadiums in preparation for the 2027 AFCON.
