In order to serve the local and regional markets, the Tanzanian government is looking for investors to revitalize the tire manufacturing facility located in Arusha.
The goal of the 55-year-old General Tyre East Africa (GTEA) rebirth is to produce one million tires for automobiles each year. According to a report released by the Ministry of Industry and Trade via the National Development Corporation (NDC), new investors would lease the plant with an option to renew for an additional 33 years.
With an installation capacity of 320,000 tires annually, GTEA was founded in February 1969 as a result of a collaboration between the Tanzanian government and General Tyre of the United States of America.
In an effort to meet local demand, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has suggested installing tyre manufacturing equipment capable of producing one million tires annually as part of its new plan. The plant is anticipated to manufacture a complete line of tires for light- and heavy-duty trucks, autos, and buses.
Exaud Kigahe, the deputy minister of industry and trade, had previously stated that the government was looking for a strategic investor who could provide the money and technology required to bring the Arusha plant back to life.
