Turkana county in Kenya launches two solar energy projects

With the goal of maximising the use of green energy solutions in Turkana, the Turkana County Department of Energy and Petroleum, in partnership with Practical Action, has started two solar energy projects in Katilu and Lolupe.

The solar energy systems were first installed to supply light and water to government and community facilities.

The initiative has been extended to assist small businesses, such as salons, barbershops, milling shops, electronic charging stations, and mechanical workshops, after it was successfully implemented.

Geoffrey Eregae, the deputy director of energy and petroleum, acknowledged the contribution of development partners such as Practical Action to the socioeconomic growth of Turkana.

“This initiative boosts delivery of services and economic resilience,” he said, adding that Turkana County’s sustainable livelihoods are being driven by the worldwide move towards renewable energy.

Engineer George Kimutai claims that Practical Action’s analysis showed that too much solar energy was being produced but not being used.

In order to solve this, solar machines with AI integration were set up at Katilu and Lolupe to effectively store and distribute excess energy.

The project has provided energy for security lighting, two milling machines, a full-time water supply, and five solar-powered banks to each of the two settlements.

It is expected that this initiative will result in an increase in employment opportunities and unlock Turkana’s economic potential through the promotion of sustainable and independent business ventures.
