The construction of the Bomas International Conference Centre (BICC), a landmark project valued at Ksh31.5 billion, is progressing under the supervision of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) through the Ministry of Defence. Launched in March 2025, the project is designed to position Kenya as a premier hub for global conferencing, cultural exchange, and economic growth.
Covering more than 323,500 square metres near Lang’ata–Magadi Road, the complex will feature an 11,000-seat convention centre, a 5,000-capacity main auditorium, a secondary 350-seat hall, and a 5,200-square-metre presidential chamber complete with VIP lounges and VVIP offices. A 3,000-seat banquet hall, meeting rooms, technical support zones, and a self-sustaining clinic are also included in the plans.
The ambitious design, integrates sustainable construction technologies such as solar power, rainwater harvesting, passive cooling, and low-energy glazing. Landscaping efforts will preserve existing trees and introduce new flora, blending modern infrastructure with environmental sustainability.
Future phases will expand the development with five-star hotels, residential blocks, a shopping mall, and cultural villages, all interconnected by pedestrian pathways and open public spaces.
Defence Principal Secretary Dr. Patrick Mariru chaired a high-level progress review meeting on the project, attended by senior government officials, KDF engineers, and the Bomas of Kenya Board. The involvement of the KDF’s Construction Engineering Brigade underscores the government’s commitment to timely delivery and high-quality construction standards. Once completed, the BICC will not only enhance Kenya’s standing as a regional conferencing destination but also create jobs, boost tourism, and provide lasting socio-economic benefits.
