Volkswagen restarts local assembly operations in Thika

The oldest car manufacturer in the nation, Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers, has resumed producing Volkswagen models at its Thika facility in an effort to gain market share in a market that is dominated by secondhand imports.

The initiative is to improve technical proficiency, increase the selection of domestically produced automobiles, and establish Kenya as a regional assembly centre.

It is anticipated that the initiative will increase employment, provide opportunities for small and mid-sized producers of parts, and lower the cost of new cars for consumers who have historically relied on imports.

Volkswagen is targeting Kenya as a distribution hub for East Africa in addition to meeting local demand by increasing assembly in nations like Kenya.
