A delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) met with Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale to explore transformative health initiatives that will alter service delivery in Kenya.
The government’s dedication to guaranteeing high-quality, easily accessible, and equitable healthcare for all citizens was emphasized at the meeting with AfDB, which was facilitated by its Division Manager of Education and Skills Development, Hendrina Doroba.
The construction of a level 6 specialist trauma hospital in Londiani, Kericho County, which will address the rising number of traffic accidents in the area, was a prominent topic of discussion.
The project is also anticipated to improve emergency care and offer life-saving assistance to the most vulnerable.
However, the proposed Level 6 Centre of Excellence in Bungoma County, a facility intended to provide comprehensive care for sickle cell disease and function as a regional blood centre, was also discussed.
According to the CS, this project will greatly increase Kenya’s ability to transfuse blood, meeting both regular and urgent medical demands throughout the area.
The establishment and complete operationalization of the East Africa Kidney Institute (EAKI), a joint project between the Kenyan government and its partners, was also discussed at the meeting.
“Once operational, EAKI will increase access to life-saving care for Kenyans by expanding specialized kidney care, improving training for medical professionals, and reducing reliance on costly international referrals,” Duale confirmed.
CS Duale, meanwhile, reiterated the government’s commitment to decentralizing specialized medical services so that all Kenyans, wherever they may be, have access to high-quality, reasonably priced healthcare.
Additionally, he emphasized that these programs support Kenya’s overall social and economic resilience by bolstering the health sector and aligning with the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
In attendance were Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Patrick Amoth, Director of Curative and Nursing Services, Dr. Andrew Toro, and Head of Infrastructure, Projects and Grants, Dr. Hezron Omollo.
During the meeting, they stressed the importance of a collaborative approach between the government and development partners in advancing Kenya’s health agenda.
