The Power and Energy Ethiopia Exhibition 2019 will be held from 21st to 23rd March in Addis Ababa . The event will target the demand for power in Ethiopia which is forecasted to grow approximately by 30% per annum. It will showcase mainly foreign products and solutions related to power generation, renewable and alternative energy & power distribution.
With a population of over 100 million, Ethiopia is one of the top markets in Africa, both for its size and growth. Currently the country has approximately 2,300 MW of installed generation capacity and has a target to increase generation capacity to over 17,000 MW by 2020, with an overall potential of 35,000 MW by 2037.
According to National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) 2014/15 annual report, Ethiopian has generated approximately 9.5 billion KWH (a 9.4% increase from 2014/15) of electricity, of which 94.7% came from hydropower resources. Hydro power is exposed to high seasonal variability and climate change related risks. The remaining 5.2% and 0.1% power generated from wind and geothermal sources, respectively.
Currently, Ethiopia Electric Power is working with Corbetti and Power Africa to develop the first 500 mw of geothermal energy. Ethiopia’s Government sees itself as a renewable energy power house. Therefore it is investing heavily to become a major power exporter in East Africa and build a green economy. The country is building several, hydro, wind and geothermal power plants. The projects will also be a crucial input to enhance Ethiopia’s economic growth to become a carbon-neutral middle income economy by 2025.
