Stakeholders in Tanzania’s forestry sector have expressed optimism that increased investment in tree plantations will strengthen the country’s industrialisation drive and secure a sustainable supply of wood and timber for the future. According to Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), the country’s timber and industrial wood market is projected to face a supply gap of 3 million cubic metres of round wood between 2025 and 2035. Industry experts say this challenge also presents a major opportunity for growth, investment and innovation in plantation forestry.
As Tanzania advances its industrialisation agenda, demand for wood is expected to rise, driven by population growth and the expansion of infrastructure, construction and manufacturing sectors. Stakeholders note that scaling up tree planting initiatives will help meet this growing demand while supporting sustainable development.
Speaking on the issue, African Forestry (AF) Chief Executive Officer, Francis Rwabogora, said large-scale investment in forestry is urgently needed and can deliver strong economic returns. With the ongoing construction of roads and railways, wood plays a key role as a raw material. Wood is not only used for charcoal, but also for pulp and paper, transmission poles and even medicine, said Mr Rwabogora.
He added that the forestry sector has the potential to play a vital role in transforming Tanzania into an industrialised economy if it is well utilised and supported through sustained investment in tree planting and plantation development. Mr Rwabogora also highlighted that increasing awareness among investors and local communities could unlock new opportunities in the sector.
Further reinforcing the sector’s growth prospects, a national wood market study shows that timber consumption is expected to more than double from 2.3 million cubic metres in 2013 to 5.2 million cubic metres by 2035, reflecting strong long-term demand. Experts say that with the right investments, Tanzania’s forestry sector can enhance industrial growth, create jobs, and ensure a reliable supply of wood while promoting sustainable forest management.
