These projects are an important part of the Coca-Cola Company’s World Without Waste commitment to collect and recycle 100 percent of its packaging by 2030.
Last year Coca-cola, along with its bottling partners, formed PET recycling company Limited in Kenya, to lead projects to pick, recycle and generate a favorable climate for investment and capitalization in manufacturing and recycling of PET bottles and packaging under the PET sector.
The plan now consists of an expansion beyond South Africa and Kenya of the group’s PET Recycling Co (PETCO) initiative, which aims to recycle 20,000 tonnes, and transfers the model to Ethiopia and Uganda.
In Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, Coca-Cola and its partners have spent $517 million on the market since January.
Already several companies that use plastic bottles to pack their products have joined forces to activate the supply chain, creating jobs and creating a circular economy where PET packaging has value and life beyond its initial use.

Coca-Cola Southern and East Africa President Bruno Pietracci in a statement on the recent developments said, “What makes Africa different when it comes to recycling is that every bottle we collect in Africa is recycled in Africa.”
Ahmed Rady, General Manager, Coca-Cola East & Central Africa Franchise said, “We have formulated strategies to ensure that our post-consumer plastic bottles do not pollute the environment as wastes. We are creating value from our bottles in a bid to drive and sustain a green economy.”
Coca-cola is also planning to introduce a 100% recycled PET bottle under the Bonaqua brand.
