Rwanda Allocate Rwf500 Billion for Major Electrification Drive

• Rwanda’s Government will use Rwf500 billion to support its universal electrification.

• The Government of Rwanda seeks to achieve universal access to electricity by 2024.

Rwanda Minister of Infrastructure, Erneste Nsanzimana, has disclosed that the Government will use Rwf500 billion to support its universal electrification efforts, focusing mainly on districts with low energy access levels.

He disclosed as he appeared before the Chamber of Deputies to respond to issues related to water and electricity access and damaged bridges across the country.

While the Government of Rwanda seeks to achieve universal access to electricity by 2024, the level is still deficient in some districts. This situation made some lawmakers question the attainment of such a target within the remaining 2 years.

The minister of infrastructure said the overall energy distribution is 74% at the national level, with estimates of over 2 million households connected to electricity across the country. According to Rwanda Energy Group, about 24% of the 2 million connected households source their energy from solar, while about 50% is from other sources, mainly hydropower.
