Following the Northern Collector Tunnel (NCT) Bulk Water Supply system’s operationalization, Nairobi County and the surrounding area should have greater availability to water for residential consumption.
Nairobi city dwellers and those living in metropolitan regions will receive an additional 140 million liters of water per day thanks to the 12-kilometer tunnel that collects water from three rivers.
The water project, which received funding of Sh. 8.2 billion, also included building a 55-kilometer pipeline from Ndakaini dam to Gigiri in Nairobi, as well as a water treatment plant at Gigoro in Gatanga sub county.
According to a news statement from Charles Karondo, chairman of the Athi Water Works Development Agency, the Water Service Board (Wasreb) has granted the agency a license to run the Northern Water Bulk Water Supply System, which will take effect on September 30 of this year.
The NCT Bulk water supply system is anticipated to enhance the availability of water to Nairobi residents and those living in the neighboring areas, the chairman continued.
The government’s larger initiatives to alleviate the water scarcity in Nairobi City County and the adjacent areas include the NCT Bulk Water Supply System.
Nairobi County is anticipated to get an additional 136,500 cubic meters of water supply per day after the tunnel is operationalized, and the water distribution in neighboring counties such as Machakos, Kiambu, Murang’a, and Kajiado would also witness notable benefits.
Karondo reassured all parties involved with the license’s issuing that AWWD will provide better water supply services to every person in the designated districts.
